Evgenios Voulgaris - Ottoman Music & Makam

ΒούλγαρηςType of seminar: Open - Music Group

Scores are given?: scores will be used extensively, but students experienced and skilled in learning by ear will not be excluded

Level of Participants: Basic/ Intermediate

The subject of the seminar will be the compositions and the repertoire of Ottoman and Turkish urban art music.

Works from the repertoire of Ottoman and Turkish urban art music will be taught and examined through the prism of modal analysis with the intent that the student will better understand the music in question and will also be able to utilize the knowledge gained within the context of improvisations (taksims).

The seminar is aimed at all musicians who play instruments capable of reproducing the microtonal intervals of this specific tradition (including singers), who are interested in this specific musical genre, or who are interested in acquiring a deeper understanding of Makam, given that it is central to the composition and interpretation of many other musical traditions which present a similar modal logic.

Evgenios Voulgaris started his music training in 1985 studying Byzantine music. His interest in traditional music started in 1992 and took the form of apprenticeship next to Christos Tsiamoulis. A multi-instrumentalist himself, he has repeatedly teamed with master musicians and composers such as Ross Daly, Christos Tsiamoulis, Nikos Kipurgos, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Notis Marvudis in concerts, recordings and television productions in Greece and abroad...
