This class focuses on Ottoman classical singing style. Students will study intonation, music theory, and analyze and interpret repertoire in meshk style. They will also learn breathing and singing techniques. Everyone learns vocal improvisation early on, leading students to a deeper understanding of makams, their usage, and related microtones. Since ornamentation is essential in Ottoman music, and even instrumentalist need to be able to vocalize the ornaments in order to play them, this class is beneficial to singers and non-singers alike. The class is open to all levels and is studio-style work where students develop individually.
