Understanding the Iranian radif through its consisting makams
The enigmatic nature of Iranian radif repertoire, that consists of multiple dastgahs and gooshes, can be better understood by employing a makam-based approach. In this approach one can arrive at a realisation that so many of the gooshes, the building elements of a dastgah, suggest similar musical material but in alternative transpositions, rhythms, intonations, and melodic phrases.
The goal of this seminar is not to disavow the complexities of each of these gooshes, but rather to understand how they each differently articulate a similar content i.e. makam. This seminar will strive towards portraying a rather whole picture of at least three dastgahs of the radif by
a) following the narrations of A. Saba, A. Davami, and Mirza Abdollah Farahani,
b) learning and analysing at least three compositions in each dastgah, and
c) helping the participants to develop an avaz (a meter free improvisation - aka taksim) based on each dastgah that will be collectively listened and discussed.
Tar and setar players will receive much more detailed comments on their playing techniques. In the process of learning the radif and the compositions, we will also focus on the particularities of performing the tahrirs (complex melodic phrasings) on our instruments and other necessary instrumental techniques to play the pieces.
