Type of seminar: Open - Vocal
Level of participants: Intermediate
This seminar is suitable for those with a background in Smyrnaic and rebetiko music who wish to study it further through the lens of its great performers, as well as for those who wish to familiarize themselves with this musical genre and its techniques.
Sight Reading: not necessary
From the female immigrant singers in America (such as Papagika, Vaka, and Magidou) to the great voices of urban, rebetiko, and Smyrnaic song during the interwar period in Athens, Thessaloniki, and beyond (including Roza Eskenazi, R. Ambatzi, and Marika Politissa), as well as the legendary Lavrentia Bernidakis from Rethymno, Crete—these artists are the most significant representatives of the late rebetiko era and the early post-war years of the later folk song tradition (Ninou, Bellou, Haskil, Georgakopoulou, and others).
In this seminar, we will study and work on a selected repertoire from this period, focusing separately on each performer and the genre she represented. We will explore their musical and cultural origins within the vibrant, multicultural environment that shaped these female singers, who lived and created in urban centers. We will also examine their influence on the musical styles of their time, as well as their lasting impact on subsequent musical developments up to the present day.
Simultaneously, we will delve into elements of technique and interpretation specific to this repertoire.
