The Lyra with Sympathetic Strings, as we know it today, first appeared in1990. It was designed by Ross Daly and the first one was constructed by the renowned luthier Nikolas Bras in Athens. It began originally as a synthesis of the Cretan Lyra and the Turkish Kemençe intended to accommodate the radically different repertoires and playing techniques of both. To this a number of sympathetic strings and jawari bridges were added which subsequently gave it an entirely different sound quality from either of its “parents”. During the three decades since its creation this instrument has not only gained in popularity but it has actually acquired quite a large repertoire of compositions especially crafted for it by a number of contemporary artists including Stelios Petrakis, Kelly Thoma, Efrèn Lopez, Murat Aydemir, Achilleas Persidis, Michiel van der Meulen, and Ross Daly. Today many illustrious luthiers construct this instrument such as Stelios Petrakis, Nikos Bras, Dimitris Makris, Yannis Panayiotopoulos, Nikos Rodopoulos, Uri Shefi et al.
In this seminar Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma will focus on the ever-growing repertoire of both contemporary and traditional material which has developed around this instrument. Emphasis will also be placed on the special techniques which have arisen for it and which lend it its characteristic sound.
Musicians playing other instruments will also be welcome in this seminar as it focuses equally on repertoire as on playing techniques.
