Danai Loukidi I Violin: Repertoire & Technique

This course will cover the fundamentals of violin technique in the repertory of Eastern mediterranean music. The repertoire will be drawn from the traditions of Greece, Turkey as well as the classical Ottoman music. The pieces will allow us to approach the makam system, concentrating on intervals, articulation, and phrasing basics. We will work on exercises for left and right hand technique, focusing on ornamentation and articulation.
We will analyze their melodic development and therelated makams via the selected repertoire. We will also study the rhythmic elements of these pieces and become familiar with time signatures from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Finally, we will approach taksim (instrumental improvisation).
This course is appropriate for students who are comfortable on their violins or other bowed instruments. We welcome those coming from different musical backgrounds who are eager to explore Eastern Mediterranean music and the specific styles of the region.
